A 2 dimensional barcode is usually a square or rectangle that contains many small patterns and dots. This can have a significant amount of data encoded within it, much more than 1D. The pattern is read both horizontally and vertically i.e. in 2 dimensions. Important in bar code verification with particular reference to the version of the artwork, as reading the 2D bar code can read the type of packaging and version number together. 1D can only read the type. Often a monitoring procedure of the CCP.
