An E number is a code for a substance that has been permitted for use as a food additive by the European Food Safety Authority. An E Number is usually declared on the food packaging together with the additive’s function in the finished food such as “Colour” or “Preservative”. However, the full additive name could also be used (e.g. Xanthan Gum instead of E415). E Numbers apply to additives used in foods in the European Union or the European Free Trade Association. Similarly, other countries have approved lists with numbering systems.
