A term used to describe the control of Listeria and other vegetative pathogens, this is through physical barriers and adherence to high care/risk procedures. Most high care and high risk sites have a physical barrier – wall – in place, but items must pass through into the high care / high risk area, such as packaging, machinery, equipment, materials (often through a spray tunnel), and Operative personal items (probes, pens, paper, clipboards etc. Barrier control procedures assess how all of this is decontaminated before entry upon high care / high risk.
