
A Food Additive is a substance which is added to or used in the manufacture of a foodstuff.
Additives are not normally consumed as such by themselves. They can serve various functions in foodstuffs.
The four general food additive categories of are:-
(1) Nutritional additives. e.g. Minerals, Vitamins.
(2) Processing additives. e.g. Emulsifiers, Stabilisers, Anti-caking agents.
(3) Preservatives.
(4) Sensory additives. e.g. Flavouring enhancers, Anti-oxidants, Sweeteners, Colours. Emulsifiers and Stabilisers could also affect the sensory properties.
Additives are regulated by the Food Safety authorities in the country or region the food is produced such as the U.S. FDA, the Indian FSSAI or the European Food Safety Authority
