One of the 14 allergens as classified by the EU. An important allergen in bakeries. Sesame is an oilseed plant. Examples of foodstuffs containing seame are Tahini, Sushi, falafel, Houmous, vegetarian burgers. Affects 1% of the population in the UK. Most cases involve mild symptoms, however, in severe cases, urgent medical help is required. The main allergenic component in sesame is 2S albumin. Because of its allergen prevelance, severity in low concentrations and being notoriously hard to clean in seed format, sesame is often seen as a higher risk allergen.
