Overall surface condition, generally characterised by construction material, mechanical damage or roughness (sometimes due to corrosive effects) can lead to the retention of product residues or be a live foreign body risk to product. Equipment and other environmental surfaces which retain product soiling after cleaning cannot be effectively disinfected (except by heat), and therefore contamination (micro and allergenic) cannot be controlled. Start up checks should instigate the inspection of the equipment surface.
